Y Strainers

Y strainer (Y filter or pipeline strainer) is an essential device for medium transmission pipeline system. It is installed on pipeline and helps to remove bigger solid particles in fluid, such as iron rust and sand grain in the sewage. This equipment can protect pipeline accessories (compressor, pump, display instrument and other devices) from wear and blocking in order to keep the medium transmission pipeline system work smoothly. Y strainer is widely applied in tap water, sewage, construction, petroleum, chemical, food, medicine, textile, electric power, shipbuilding, metallurgy, energy and other pipeline systems.

Principle of Pipeline Strainer
When the fluid flows in filter cartridge, the impurities (solid particles) are blocked by filter mesh and purified liquid flows out from the exit of filter.

Connection Types of Y Strainer
1. Flanged Connection (SLVY Hand Brush Type/YSTFH Rod Telescopic Flanged Connection)
2. Screwed Connection (GL11 Threaded Connection)

1. Size of the Mesh: When choosing mesh size, you should consider the diameter of the impurity.
2. Entrance and Exit Diameter: Generally, entrance and exit diameter of strainer should not be smaller than the entrance diameter of the supporting pump, and should agree with the diameter of entrance pipeline.
3. Nominal Pressure: Pressure rating of Y strainer is determined by the maximum pressure of filtration pipeline.
4. Material of Filter: Material of pipeline strainer is similar with pipeline it connects. You can choose casting iron, carbon steel, low alloy steel and stainless steel Y filters considering your different serving conditions.
5. Gasket on Y strainer: When mounting socket welding or all D series strainers with diameter of 1-1/4" or above, you should notice that the gasket on the strainer is made of nonmetal material and it is easy to be damaged because of overheating. Therefore, please decrease welding time and cool the filter after welding. If it needs preheating before welding or heating after welding, we suggest dismounting the gasket before heating.
6. Filter Mesh: Key component of Y strainer is filter element, which is made up of filter frame and stainless steel wire mesh. Stainless steel wire mesh is quick-wear part and needs special protection. When removing the impurities, stainless steel wire mesh can not be deformed or damaged. If it is deformed or damaged, please replace immediately. If not, the filtration purity of medium will not reach designed standard. The compressor, pump, meter and other device will also be damaged. When the pipeline strainer works for a certain time, lots of impurities will be piled up on the filter mesh. The pressure increases and flow rate decreases. Please remove the impurities in time to keep the pipeline system work smoothly.
7. Cleaning: Please clean Y strainer so as to remove the impurities piled up on strainer mesh at initial working period (usually within the first week). After the first week, please clean the equipment regularly. If there is no drain plug on your filter, please dismount mesh stopper and mesh for cleaning.

1. Before installing Y strainer, please clean the threaded connection surface carefully, and use pipeline sealant or teflon belt on its surface to tighten sealing. The innermost threaded connection should not be sealed by pipeline sealant or teflon belt, in case that pipeline sealant or teflon belt may enter the pipeline system.
2. Pipeline strainer can be installed horizontally or downward vertically. The arrow direction on the valve body should agree with water flow direction.
3. For the convenience of maintaining, Y strainer should be mounted together with globe valve. Globe valve should be installed in upstream and downstream. Once Y filter needs maintenance, you can close the globe valves in upstream and downstream, and cut down its connection with pipeline system.
4. It would be better to install pressure gage in upstream and downstream of filter. Large pressure difference between upstream and downstream means that there are already lots of impurities on filter mesh and the mesh should be cleaned.
5. To keep the normal use of pipeline system during maintenance of Y strainer, it is better to install a bypass pipeline. In normal times, keep the globe valve on bypass pipeline closed. When Y filter needs maintenance, open the globe valve on bypass pipeline in order not to delay normal operation of the pipeline system.
6. When mounting pipeline strainer, please reserve some space for the convenience of daily maintenance.
